SATA Drive serial number presentation to OS

  • Hi,

Do the tray-less USB 3.2 3.5" SATA Docking Stations provide full access to the drive to the Operating System, including SMART info, and importantly, the original serial number of the drive. This is a critical feature as looking at using them for wiping drives so the records need to be correct. From memory my Sabrent USB 3.0 one didn't but I can't recall.

  • @Seb I would need to know the specific models in question in order to check/test this functionality.

  • For example, the DS-SC5B

  • @john This information is generally found in a SMART reader like CrystalDiskInfo, but multi-bay/disk enclosures sometimes clone UUIDs due to how they work. Smartmontools/smartctl should also work well. Some commandline tools such as wmic on Windows or ls (or lshw, or hdparm) on Linux can help determine specific drive information. I would recommend testing this first before proceeding and if the results do not meet your needs, I would recommend a more robust storage solution.
