Product Code: DS-SC5B Continually runs even when the computer is switched off?

  • Hello, I have a DS-SC5B 5-bay station and I was wondering if it's common for hard drives to continue operating even after powering off my computer.

After turning off the computer at night, I notice that the bay is still slightly warm when I touch it in the morning. Interestingly, when I checked the Power on Hours on CrystalDiskInfo, I found that the running hours really increased, even though the PC was switched off.

Even while I can manually turn it off on the station's rear panel, it will be a pain to have to touch each hard drive's power button twice to turn it on. haha

My question is, is this the standard, and is it safe to leave hard drives operating all the time, even when the computer isn't turned on?

  • @bradleyearnest006 The drives and their idle operating status can maybe be modified with the host system, operating system and/or in the UEFI, as it's probably a USB power/sleep thing. You may be able to change this behavior but if not, drives in idle induce minimal wear.
