Proposed Work and Home Setup sharing Magic Keyboard/Trackpad, LG 5K, and USB/TB peripherals between two macs

  • I drew this diagram up, I might have confused TB up and down ports, but I'm hoping this is feesible:

My assumption is that the KVM and the Caldigit dock are smart enough to agree that no power delivery needs to go between them.

  • @CS Marshall Well, let us know if it works!

  • @Sabrent isn't the whole point of pre-sales questions for me to ask questions and ya'll help to answer them, I'm confused :/

  • @CS Marshall We can't know for sure with Caldigit hardware. You would have to see if Thunderbolt 4 allows this in its spec and if the Caldigit is Thunderbolt certified, which it probably is. Both laptops have to use a port with DP Alt Mode and if this is passed through correctly it in theory should work.

  • As an update, this setup works perfectly, I have a button on my desk that I can press that switches all the USB peripherals (keyboard trackpad, webcam etc) from the caldigit hub with the macbook directly to a mac mini that I have bolted under my desk.

The only slight downside is that the switch time can sometimes be several seconds, but just one button to switch everything over is pretty sweet.  Now to just get my windows so they go back to the right places when switching back and forth.
