HB-U4HP Shows up as a USB3.2 hub on laptops with i9-13900H

  • Hi, I got the nice and small HB-U4HP but when connected to the TB4 port directly of my Asus ROG Flow X16 2023 (Intel), it shows up as a USB3.2 hub instead of a USB4.0 hub.  I have tried with another machine (ROG Flow Z13) and the MSI Stealth (Core Ultra 9 185H).  The HB-U4HP shows up as USB3.2 hub on all of them when directly attached to the TB4 ports on the machines.

When connected to Macbooks, and also Surface Laptop (Qualcomm Arm chipset), the HB-U4HP shows up correctly as a USB4 hub.  Also when connected indirectly (via another TB4 hub) to the Intel machines, the HB-U4HP shows up correctly as a USB4 hub.

Is there a solution to this?

  • @Marshall Lai I will check into this and reply back.

  • @Marshall Lai It looks like multiple potential issues. Firstly, only one port might be capable of full speed at all times, depending on the model. This can be related to ports used for charging. Due to hardware/wiring and firmware, some Thunderbolt ports will also not properly negotiate at full USB speeds and will fallback to 10Gbps instead. USB4 speeds have to be supported by both the device and the host, plus any intermediary if such exists, which isn't guaranteed.
