What is your best suggestion(s) for a Thunderbolt adapter for M.2 NVMe to Laptop?

    Hello 

    Two cousins need to solve the following situation:

    Exists two laptops where each one:

    • Have M.2 NVMe with 500GB and 1TB respectively
    • Have Thunderbolt 3 and 4 respectively
    • Can not be opened to increase the SSD, they are new and is not wise lose the warranty

    About storage and being  not the case:

    • If is only need it more space to store then is enough buy a pendrive (USB Flash Drive)

    But the situation and being the problem is:

    • Is need it more space to store and use data at realtime

    For example for:

    • Rendering in architecture
    • Editions of video
    • VirtualBox .vdi files for each one with 500GB

    Therefore because is not possible:

    • Upgrade the current "M.2 NVMe"
    • Buy a new "M.2 NVMe" and put it within the laptop itself as secondary storage

    I thought the following:

     

    1. Buy a "M.2 NVMe" with a higher capacity (2TB, 4TB)

    2. Buy a Thunderbolt adapter for "M.2 NVMe" to Laptop

     

    Yes, I know the difference about data transfer between

    • "M.2 NVMe" directly to the Laptop's mobo
    • "M.2 NVMe" through the Thunderbolt adapter

    Of course the latter should be slower than the former. How slow? I don't know but because it is Thunderbolt it should be faster than USB Type A,B etc.

    Therefore you as company and according with your own products

    Question

    • What is your best suggestion(s) for a Thunderbolt adapter for M.2 NVMe to Laptop?

    I am assuming should exist as:

    • Hybrid adapter to work as either 3 or 4
    • Specific adapter to work as 3
    • Specific adapter to work as 4

    Of course, it involves the Generation and  Lanes of the "M.2 NVMe" too

    @Manuel Jordan A direct M.2/PCIe connection will always be preferred, even if the maximum throughput is lower. For external use, Thunderbolt or USB4 will provide the best experience with PCIe tunneling. Thunderbolt 3 and up should be fine for this as even the lowest 22Gbps data speeds are plenty. Devices lacking TB/USB4 will fallback to USB 10Gbps though. If purchasing a drive now, a Gen 4 SSD is recommended, like our newer Rocket 4. Any of our Thunderbolt 3+ enclosures will work, we have recently put out a Thunderbolt 5 one and are continuously working on USB4 products that work with Thunderbolt 3/4.

    @Manuel Jordan Hey Manuel. We have Thunderbolt/Thunderbolt 5 and USB4 enclosures in the process of being released. We sell Thunderbolt 3 devices for external SSDs, as well as SSDs that are self-enclosed like the nano XTRM. I would recommend waiting if you want the newest/fastest technology.

    Sounds great! ... pls be sure to reduce the heat best as you can. It is a big concern. It to let us use the adapter by hours

    I need two adapters for Thunderbolt 3 and 4. But I want buy two for Thunderbolt 5 and expect the downgrade for Thunderbolt 3 and 4 respectively

    Question: Pls could you confirm that is possible expect a downgrade about the speed from Thunderbolt 5 to 3 and 4 without any problems?

    I would recommend waiting if you want the newest/fastest technology.

    @Manuel Jordan Heat is something we test and are looking at more carefully. As for Thunderbolt, by spec it is supposed to be backward compatible but will be slower and may not support all features. We clearly mention support in the marketing and manual. For Intel certified products we also work with them to get the backward compatibility table just right.

    Has sense about the "slow" speed impact but pls could you clarify about the possible lost "features"?

    I understand, but remember to pls share the links of the new products when they are available and to see the mentioned manual

    @Manuel Jordan It means that, say, Thunderbolt 4 devices work best with Thunderbolt 4 compliant hosts/ports and that using it on an older machine could result in a reduced experience. This is less of a concern with Thunderbolt 4 and 3 as Thunderbolt 5 is a larger leap over the previous generation, having features like Bandwidth Boost with asymmetric lanes.

    If I understood well the impact of less performance from Thunder 4 to 3 is "minimum" against Thunderbolt 5 to 4 where the impact is more considerable. Did I understand the idea correctly?

    @Manuel Jordan That's correct. Thunderbolt 3 in many cases has a data transport of 22Gbps which includes overhead which means 2.7 GB/s is about all you can get, sometimes you can get more with the right Thunderbolt 4 devices and hosts but it's still four lanes of PCIe 4.0 passthrough. Thunderbolt 5 doubles that to PCIe 5.0. There are also other features as the specification is refined such as asymmetric bandwidth.

    @Manuel Jordan We have everything in the lab, just a matter of getting them onto retailer shelves once they pass our QC. There are many reasons for delay. Sometimes it's about regulations, especially in the EU, and other times it's about logistics which can impact Oceania and other areas. In many cases it's an issue of stock or production versus demand which can be affected from many sources. This is why we can never give firm dates because our leadtime varies even over the course of a year.
