I'm looking for help with the Sabrent USB-C Hub

  • Hello everyone 🙂

I trust all is well with you. I recently acquired a Sabrent USB C hub Model HB T3HP to help organize my workspace and connect several devices to my MacBook Pro M1, 2021. While the hub serves most of my needs effectively, I've encountered a few issues. I'm reaching out in hopes that the community or support team can offer some guidance.

I use my 1TB Sabrent external SSD for storing files and running data-intensive applications. This SSD is linked to the hub, yet during large file transfers, I've noticed it frequently disconnects and reconnects. It disrupts my workflow and sometimes complicates the transfer process, which can be quite frustrating. I have tried using different hub ports, yet the issue persists. The hub seems to be the issue, as the SSD operates flawlessly when connected directly to the laptop.

Has anyone else experienced issues with external disks and the Sabrent USB C hub? Are there any recommended configurations or firmware updates that might help in addressing this issue?

My external 4K monitor, a Dell U2720Q, connects to the HDMI port on the hub, but there's a slight lag. Despite a notable delay, the video output performs effectively, particularly during video editing or when engaging with graphic-intensive applications. I believe the cable isn't the issue, as I'm utilizing a high-quality HDMI 2.1 cable. Can this issue be resolved? Also, is there a limitation on the hub's bandwidth when multiple devices are connected?

I would appreciate any assistance in resolving this issue or recommendations for an improved video output configuration.
I’m considering the possibility of expanding my storage options. I’m considering the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus SSDs for my desktop PC build, utilizing a PCIe Gen 3 NVMe drive. While my workflow includes extensive 4K video editing and significant data transfers, I'm uncertain about the value of upgrading to PCIe Gen 4. I’m keen on exploring the options for 2TB or 4TB. When considering these types of jobs, is there a noticeable performance enhancement, or would it be wiser to stick with a Gen 3 drive and save some cash?

I would greatly appreciate any insights or recommendations regarding the use of Rocket 4 Plus SSDs in professional applications.

Currently, my hub setup includes a 4K monitor, a wireless mouse, an external SSD, and occasionally a USB A keyboard.

The latest firmware updates for the MacBook Pro, SSD, and hub have been successfully installed.

I primarily utilize data-intensive applications, engage in graphic design, and focus on video editing.

I also looked into some topics related to this https://sabrent.com/community/xenforum/topic/142854/can-t-update-firmware-of-salesforceadministrator-rocket-nvme4-2tb-with-sabrent-control, but I didn't find a satisfactory solution to my query. I would greatly appreciate assistance from someone with more experience.

Thank you for your assistance ahead of time. I absolutely love Sabrent products and have only had great experiences with them so far; these issues are just minor hiccups.

  • @bato3nabit Hey, I'm not sure what product you intended as HB-T3HP isn't one I'm aware of, but I will try to help. I'll make the blanket statement that USB 3.0 hubs will sometimes interfere or be interfered with by 2.4 GHz wireless signals which includes wireless routers/modems/adapters, Bluetooth, wireless devices, some applications, and more. This is a known thing but may not apply here.

As for the SSD disconnecting, if not from this it's possible the hub is overheating from the sustained transfer or, perhaps more likely, the hub is unable to provide sufficient power for the drive/enclosure. This can probably be determined through feel. Video lag should be minimal unless there's an adapter or switch somewhere in the line, but possibly the right setting in the monitor and/or OS could alleviate this issue. It could be a resolution or refresh rate issue. As for firmware updates, if they exist then customer service on the website can assist you with that in many cases.

Gen 4 is a worthwhile upgrade if you need the bandwidth in particular. Newer drives will be more efficient and responsive, too, but these are less noticeable updates. If transferring files a lot it can be worth getting a newer drive. It does sound like you do that, but the overall system has to be taken into consideration as it needs to be capable of running multiple drives for full advantage.
