Hello,
I just tried using the Sabrent 5-bay USB enclosure to create a RAID with 5 drives, but the speed was only USB 2 (~80 MiB/s). When I reduced it to 4 drives, the speed increased to about 200 MiB/s.
Has anyone experienced a similar situation?
Is this a limitation of USB 3.1, a Sabrent bug, or a host device issue?
Thank!
@paulajblanton 80 MiB/s is about double USB 2.0 but other than that, it's possible using all five bays on a daisy-chained controller could reduce performance.
@golf hit It’s not a USB 3.1 bandwidth limit—your speeds suggest the enclosure or firmware drops to USB 2.0 mode when all 5 bays are active. Most likely it’s a Sabrent enclosure quirk/bug or compatibility issue with your host controller, not the drives or USB spec itself.
@jankygiddy It might be daisychained as many USB hubs or hub chips have a port limit, usually 4.
