Hello,
I just tried using the Sabrent 5-bay USB enclosure to create a RAID with 5 drives, but the speed was only USB 2 (~80 MiB/s). When I reduced it to 4 drives, the speed increased to about 200 MiB/s.
Has anyone experienced a similar situation?
Is this a limitation of USB 3.1, a Sabrent bug, or a host device issue?
Thank!
@paulajblanton 80 MiB/s is about double USB 2.0 but other than that, it's possible using all five bays on a daisy-chained controller could reduce performance.
@golf hit It’s not a USB 3.1 bandwidth limit—your speeds suggest the enclosure or firmware drops to USB 2.0 mode when all 5 bays are active. Most likely it’s a Sabrent enclosure quirk/bug or compatibility issue with your host controller, not the drives or USB spec itself.
@jankygiddy It might be daisychained as many USB hubs or hub chips have a port limit, usually 4.
It sounds like you’ve encountered a common issue with multi-drive setups. It could indeed be a limitation of the USB 3.1 or how the Sabrent enclosure manages the data flow. Testing with fewer drives seems like a good approach! Speaking of speed, if you're looking for something fun, check out the Slope Game for a thrilling challenge! @basketball stars Hey everyone! I’ve been using the Sabrent 5-bay for a while, and I totally noticed the slow speeds when all drives are in use. I found that adjusting the RAID settings helped a bit. Anyone tried swapping out cables? That made a significant difference for me! Thanks for sharing this discussion!
I appreciate the precise information on the Scratch Games Sabrent 5-bay USB enclosure's performance issues! It's fascinating to observe how using all five drives may slow things down. Have any of you tried altering firmware settings or changing drive configurations to increase speed?
