Daisy chained DS-SC5B duplicating drives in Windows 11

  • I just set up two DS-SC5B 5 bay drives.  The first is connected to the USB 4 port on a Minisforum M1 Pro-125H and the second is daisy chained off of the first.  I'm running Windows 11 and using Stablebit's Drivepool software.  After chasing all sorts of strange behavior, I finally figured out that whatever drives are in the daisy chained DS-SC5B are showing up twice in Windows.  Disk Management in windows immediately pops of a dialog telling me I need to initialize the disks (I actually did this once to experiment--that was a mess).

Basically, it doesn't matter what disks are in the daisy chained controller, or how many of them there are.  If there's 1 disk, it's  shown twice in Windows, if there's 5 disks, those are all shown twice.  Any idea what's going on here and how I can fix this?

Possibly unrelated, but on two occassions all drives in the DS-SC5B enclosures disappeared from the OS for 20-30 seconds, then slowly reconnected.  Hopefully that's not reoccurrant behavior.

  • @UV1 If you're using two of the 5-bays the issue might be with unique IDs being duplicated. Windows also has a habit of claiming drives for Storage Spaces, so make sure they are not automatically allocated there.

  • Storage Spaces is turned off, so that shouldn't be an issue.  What do you mean by "Unique IDs being duplicated"?  What steps should I take if that's the case?

  • I've now tried these two units 1) not daisy chained on the same pc and 2) daisy chained and not daisy chained on a different pc.  In both scenarios, I've run into the same drive duplication issue.

Direct question: Is this duplication of drives expected behavior?  Reading through the lines of the phrase, "might be with unique IDs being duplicated" is making me wonder.  Is there any scenario where two DS-SC5B units can be connected to the same Windows 11 pc without drive duplication?  If not, I'm returning these ASAP.
