  EC-SNVE does not work at all reading data from solidigm P41 Plus on LINUX x64 ubuntu 23.04

  EC-SNVE firmware version is unknown because it isn't listed anywhere I can find it in LINUX diagnostic log / utility output (???) but these are new drives / enclosures bought within the past few months sold by sabrent's own Amazon store as vendor.

  Tested:

  Two new EC-SNVE units, with two new solidigm P41 plus 2TB each SSDs installed respectively.

  Results:

  1: The SSD enclosure is recognized normally when plugged in and the disc drivers create the appropriate devices etc.

  2: Using 'dd' to write small or large amounts of data continually from LBA 0 up to whatever number (e.g. filling the whole 2TBy SSD) generally completes in a roughly normal time (I'll go back and look more at the writing since it was the first thing I tried and as it appeared to succeed at a rough level I didn't characterize all details of multiple tests.)

  3: Using 'dd' to read any modest amount of data from the disk device (e.g. a few megabytes or even perhaps less) starting from LBA 0 fails immediately and completely and no read data is produced.  Many errors resulting from the I/O reading failure processes are logged to syslog while the read "hangs" and attempts to work.

  Comparison test:

  A third new EC-SNVE unit with a 1TBy KC-3000 SSD passes these kinds of bulk READ and bulk WRITE tests on the exact same PC, exact same USB port, exact same OS setup (even without rebooting after the P41 Plus tests failed) and many gigabytes can be sequentially read or written on this third EC-SNVE with the KC-3000 1TBy SSD.

  System note:

  Besides the three tested EC-SNVE units, the same system has a WD 2TB M.2 NVME SSD installed directly via PCIE and that works normally so this and the generally successful tests on the EC-SNVE 1TB KC3000 SSD indicates that this OS / system / type-C SS USB port can work normally with SSDs and high speed USB I/O.

  As another test I briefly tried to online-disable the UAS driver by unplugging the EC-SNVE, modifying the usb-storage driver to add a UAS disabling quirk configuration via sysfs, and verifying that seemed to work via syslog before re-connecting the EC-SNVE and running another dd sequential read input tests on the 2TB P41 Plus. 

  No improvement was noted without UAS active for it.

  @J Smith This appears to be an issue with the P41 Plus and the bridge chip used, the Realtek RTL9210B. I'll have to see if we have a P41 Plus on hand for testing. On Windows, that drive has its own Solidigm driver to enable additional features, but this does not pass through a bridge chip/UASP.

  I saw that phoronix did a linux based test on the P41 plus which seemed (as far as I saw) to work OK for them when the SSD was used in LINUX directly in a M.2 slot so as far as I have seen the "extra" MS-Windows support that solidigm adds is only to do with better disc-cache management than what the MS-Windows driver offers by default and so it may help performance in some use case scenarios (because of better cache strategy) but it (the MS-Windows specific support) is entirely optional, and someone from Solidigm said that their own (Solidigm) specifications and benchmarks were made NOT using the MS-Windows special support but that that is made available as an optional "it may help a bit if you want to use it" add-on.

  So I just moved one of the EC-SNVE units with a P41 Plus 2TB SSD in it (one of the same as I tested on a different system yesterday) to a different system -- ASUS Crosshair Hero VIII WiFI and again used the motherboard-resident back I/O panel USB-C port for a test.

  This time the OS was manjaro (as opposed to Ubuntu 23.04 yesterday).

  The results were similar to the other system / other OS test of yesterday -- when I plug in the enclosure and immediately do a sequential SSD synchronous write test using dd it completes without much syslog errors noted and has ~200 MBy/s write throughput.

  When I unplug the enclosure, reconnect it, and perform a sequential synchronous dd ssd-read test the test fails completely pretty immediately and the I/O errors (noted in the syslog during the test) hang the dd process requiring it to be killed without any progress / completion success.

  So I think the variables in play could be:

  1: My particular ASUS motherboards (both relatively quality units in the product line, both with relatively recent but possibly not 100% current BIOS)

  2: What PCIE link speed is; the MB ports I tested today & yesterday claim to be capable of 10Gb/s, but I didn't check the device driver information to verify if it was running at 10Gb.

  3: The particular EC-SNVE units I have, though it seems unlikely a unique defect since I have three of them and only the two with P41 Plus 2TB SSDs have similarly repeatable problems while the one with the KC3000 1TB SSD works fine in the same OS / port, and the enclosures / SSDs are new out of the boxes.

  4: The EC-SNVE firmware these units shipped with which should be pretty recent for few-months old units I suppose, but maybe not the very latest. 

  5: Some kind of user-error with respect to my OS / HW / test setup but since the EC-SNVE with the KC3000 works fine for me and other non-sabrent enclosures with KC3000s in them work for me I'm guessing I probably am likely doing stuff right and it's a difference wrt. the SSD vs enclosure / OS difference maybe.

  I've heard that the HMB (host memory buffer) feature doesn't pass through common USB to NVME bridge chips (I learned that yesterday searching for explanations to this) which is a bit surprising to me but shouldn't itself break anything since AFAIK HMB is totally optional for most (all?) NVME SSDs but can just improve performance if used with e.g. the DRAM-less SSDs to hold their dynamic caches.

  IDK if the P41 Plus 2TB is at a different NVME specification revision vs. the KC3000 or something, I didn't check though I might some time to see if there are any significant differences.

  But I've seen no other reports of P41 Plus failures in USB UASP enclosures so I'm assuming it's not super pervasive / a well known issue.

  I did this on the crosshair / manjaro system which I most recently tested upon and from this I believe that on that system at least the EC-SNVE should be able / trying to run at 10G (2x1 IIRC from the specification sheet):

  @J Smith HMB does not pass through USB, that is correct. It can pass through on some USB4 implementations but not with the bridge chip used on the EC-SNVE. Some consumer drives do not conform to flush, which has been detailed by some users on Twitter, including Hynix/Solidigm drives like the Gold P31, even with fsync.
