Sabrent Rocket 4.0 Slow Read

  • Hello,

I have three Sabrent Rocket 4.0 2TB NVMes in my computer, which is running a linux system.

Two of the devices have very slow read speeds (as measured by the "fio" tool, but also others)

    - /dev/nvme0n1 - 182 MiB/s

    - /dev/nvme1n1 - 4410 MiB/s

    - /dev/nvme2n1 - 153 MiB/s

The only difference I can notice is that the slow devices have been used in RAID1 configuration and they have far more reads (~90 TB) than writes (~6 TB) while the fast one has more writes (~51 TB) than reads (~17 TB).

The devices remain slow also when removed from the RAID1 array so it doesn't seem to be a RAID driver issue.

What could be the cause of the slowness and what can I do to address the issue?

Also, by the way, is there a way to upgrade the Sabrent Rocket firmware on linux?

  • @s.stefanek The read speed on two of those drives is very low. It's possible this is from stale data and potentially lack of TRIM, in which case the drives would have to be secure erased to determine if the performance returns. This means breaking the array and running singly, though. If the drive remain slow and may be damaged, see if replacement is an option. As for firmware, the tools provided by Phison are Windows-based, but we continue to look into a bootable option.

  • I will try to remove each drive from the array, format it with the nvme tool and then readd it.

But... shouldn't lack of TRIM impact only write speeds? Why would read speed be impacted?

  • @s.stefanek It's possible the data is becoming stale from a lack of refreshing which can impact read performance over the long term.
