Updated Firmware for HB-U4HP Inquiry

  • Hello,

I have a couple of travel hubs from Sabrent (model no. HB-U4HP), and I really like them. One issue that existed previously is that MacOS didn't support HDMI 2.1 over a USB-C connection properly, so 4K displays were capped at 120 Hz. There are ways around this (i.e., EDID editing to spoof a Display Port 1.4 connection), but all come with tradeoffs that don't fully take advantage of the HDMI 2.1 spec.

However, as far as I know, MacOS Tahoe has enabled HDMI 2.1 over their thunderbolt ports (including via DSC over USB-C - I don't fully understand the technology, but there's an interesting article about it here), which I think is fantastic news. Therefore, I am trying to see if there is a firmware update available for the HB-U4HP hub, as this would be greatly appreciated. I tried to check the Sabrent downloads page, but I think it's currently down or something (something to do with CloudFlare DNS). Given that the hub is advertised as supporting the HDMI 2.1 spec (e.g., 12 bit HDR, 4K 120 Hz) for computers that use DSC (which MacOS now does), I believe that a firmware update should be made available. I purchased the dock after the Tahoe update was released, so given the advertised specification of supporting HDMI 2.1 through DSC enabled computers, I was expecting to have access to this spec. I wouldn't have spent the money otherwise.

If anyone knows anything about the status of a potential firmware update for this hub, please let me know!

    Thanks
