I got my new USB 3.0 SATA Hard Drive docking station today but when I installed it and inserted the 14 TB hard drive I have it won't read. So I started searching online for solutions.
The info: I have a refurbished Dell Optiplex 9020 running Windows 10 Pro. I have an older Sabrent external drive station that has no problem reading both of my large 12 & 14 TB hard drives. I know its not the computer that has the problem.
Both drives are GB NTFS formatted with one partition. Its not the MBR type thus needs a firmware update to be read.
I went to Sabrent's support page, entered in the model number, downloaded the firmware update and powered up the docking station without the drive inserted. The operation was successful but when I reinserted the drive it still was not being read by Windows OS.
This is the firmware update I used: JMS583_FWUpdate_Utility_v1_0_0_8
Is there something else I need to do? I would like to be able to use this docking bay as I like the cooling fan option.
NOTE: I CAN boot up a 6 TB hard drive with this docking station. The larger drives are not reading.
Any ideas?
@wmp3662 Depending on the drive, it may have to be formatted in the enclosure to be enclosure-readable. You may also be able to use a program like DMDE to see if the data is present and readable. For firmware problems/requests, check with the site technical support/customer service as they may have up-to-date information or firmware.
Bought another unit and still having the same problem. Sent a message to SABRENT Tech Support. Awaiting answer.
Apparently the problem is the chipset. The JP chipset needs a firmware update but when I ran a utility that I found on the SABRENT site it said it updated it but the drive still was no reading problem.
Am in the "holding pattern" waiting for the email to arrive.
@wmp3662 Thank you for the update.
Tried the update today but it didnt work. I accidentally updated the older docking station (also an EC-DFLT) and now it doesn't work. Tech support to get back with me on this tomorrow.
FYI .. this later info has to do with the EC-DFLT docking station. I bought a new one and it would not read the hard drive. I read up on the entire issue and it has to do with the device looking for a totally different type of sector format.
@wmp3662 This is a consequence of wanting to support larger drives on legacy systems.
Final note on the matter: there appears to be no way to update your products to allow for the larger drives to work with them. I am getting a SATA to 3.0 USB cable today and if that works I will continue copying the files over to a drive in my system. Then I will reformat the drive from the new docking station and go from there. If testing works on the docking station-HDD setup then I will keep it. If not then I will reformat the drive via the new cable.
As to Legacy system ... this Dell has worked fine so far. It seems like the problem is on your end not mine. Since the drive was originally formatted using YOUR docking station and now it wont work in the SAME piece of hardware YOU folks need to get your act together. Your hardware is the issue. Product 1 being the older one but the same as Product 2 but not reading the drive. How can you say that the PC is to blame? I dont get that. I worked in the IT Dept of my company for 5 years. We would have never bought your products again and moved on to a different company.
So quit pushing the blame off on legacy products. I bought the same docking station again but it wont read the drive that was formatted in YOUR product which is the SAME MODEL.
DUH!
